Dr. Comelia L. Walker is a Canton native, a 2018 and 2020 graduate of Jackson State University with a B.S. in Mathematics and M.A. in Teaching, a 2023 graduate of Mississippi College with a Ed.S. in Educational Leadership: Administration, and a 2025 graduate of Jackson State University with a Ph.D. in Education Administration and Supervision.

 

Dr. Walker completed her primary and secondary education in Canton Public Schools. Walker graduated from Canton High School as salutatorian and was a member of the Student Council, Beta Club, National Honor Society, Foundation Club, Superintendent Student Advisory Council and Math Club. She also served as Miss Freshman 2010-2011, Miss National Honor Society 2011-2012, Miss Student Government Association 2012-2013 and Miss Canton High School 2013-2014 along with receiving accolades in both band and track.

 

While at Jackson State University, Comelia served her campus and class in several capacities. Her first step towards creating a Jacksonian legacy started with acceptance in the Summer Bridge Program where she served as the Math Tutor for College Algebra and Trigonometry. She received an accolade for being Valedictorian of her College Algebra course.

 

During her freshman year, she served as a researcher for Progress in Integrating Technology in the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics at HBCU’s Scholar. During her sophomore year, she served as a researcher for EXTREEMS-QED Scholar (Expeditions in Training, Research and Education for Mathematics and Statistics through Quantitative Exploration of Data). She was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Lambda Beta Chapter, where she exemplified Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood. Walker continues her membership in Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated, Tau Upsilon Zeta Chapter. 

 

As the 78th Miss Jackson State University, Dr. Walker continued her legacy of service to peers via her platform “Project: F.A.M.I.L.Y., an acronym for Forming an Alliance while Maintaining Individualism and Leading the Youth” that focused on allowing students to build “connect groups” with other individuals who share similar interest, highlighting students’ talents and interests through events where they could display their skills while connecting with others from an artistic perspective, and involving community engagement where JSU students reamed with local public school and provided mentorship and tutoring opportunities. 

 

Dr. Walker serves as the Founder of Finally First, a mentorship program started during her reign as Miss JSU that is now a non-profit organization. Finally First’s purpose is to provide personal and social development opportunities while learning the importance of self-worth, networking, and social action. As a self-publishing author, Walker aims to assist man in finding the best practices that cater and prioritize self.  

 

In her capacity as a secondary mathematics educator for JPSD,  Walker received Teacher of the Year at Callaway High School during her first year and became a Teacher Champion for Algebra I in the district during her second year. As a professional educator, she specialized in teaching mathematics and assisting students with passing statewide assessments. As a graduate student, Walker served as a STEM STARS Scholar (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Scholars Teacher Academy Resident System), U.S.PREP Scholar (University-School Partnerships for the Renewal of Educator Preparation), Graduate Assistant of Disability Services and ADA Compliance, and Mathematics Tutor for the Upward Bound Program of Tougaloo College. Briefly serving as the Retention and Withdrawal Officer for Student Success at Jackson State University, Walker learned how to create a culture for education during COVID-19. Dr. Walker served as the Instructional Coach at Nichols Middle School where she provided academic support for teachers and students.

 

Walker values her time spent in CPSD as she paid homage to the educational system that gave her purpose and reason to thrive. During her time as a candidate for Mayor of Canton, Mississippi in 2025, Dr. Comelia Walker championed a vision centered on “A New Way, A New Voice, A Better Canton for All.” Her campaign emphasized unity, forward-thinking leadership, and inclusive progress aimed at uplifting every citizen and revitalizing the community.

 

Walker serves as a Student Success Coach at Millsaps College where she provides services to undergraduate students and the college on retention management, outreach, and intervention. Walker serves as a Community Leader for the City of Canton, MS where she stewards a Canton Beautification Initiative that allows her to conduct cleanups to maintain the health and beauty of the city. Dr.Walker’s ultimate goal is to become a catalyst leader so that, in a higher capacity, she can provide a listening ear to individuals and better serve the community. 

 

Dr. Walker knows God is the only man from whom she seeks validation and this is what encourages her to become a believer, inspirer and servant of others. She lives by the Zeta mantra that ‘all is conquered by labor.
